Why Some People Learn Faster When They Stop Rereading Their Notes

Studying often looks productive long before it actually becomes effective. You read a chapter, highlight the important parts, go through your notes, and then read everything again before the test. By the third or fourth time, the material feels incredibly familiar.

That familiarity can be misleading.

Recognizing an answer when it’s sitting in front of you is different from being able to produce the answer yourself. This is one reason someone can spend hours studying and still suddenly go blank when the book is closed.

Changing how you review information can make studying much more active.

Familiarity Can Feel Like Knowledge

Imagine reading the same definition five times. By the fifth reading, you can move through the sentence quickly because you already know what’s coming next.

That creates a feeling of confidence.

Now cover the definition and try to explain it without looking. If the words suddenly disappear, you’ve discovered the difference between recognition and recall.

Rereading isn’t useless. It can help when you're first encountering difficult material. The problem comes when rereading becomes the main way you prepare.

Close the Book and Try to Remember

One alternative is retrieval practice: attempting to recall information before checking the answer.

You can do this in several ways:

  • Answer practice questions without looking at your notes.
  • Use flashcards and say the answer before flipping the card.
  • Write down everything you remember about a topic.
  • Cover part of your notes and try to reconstruct it.
  • Explain yesterday’s lesson from memory before beginning today’s.

The important part is the attempt.

You don’t have to get everything right. In fact, getting something wrong can be useful because it immediately shows you what needs more attention.

Turn Your Notes Into Questions

Instead of simply reading notes from top to bottom, convert headings into questions.

Suppose your notes contain a section called Causes of the Industrial Revolution.

Turn it into:

What were the major causes of the Industrial Revolution?

Then hide the notes and answer.

If another section says Three Functions of the Respiratory System, ask yourself to name and explain the three functions before checking.

Suddenly, your notes become a testing tool rather than reading material.

Try Teaching the Topic

Explaining something in your own words can quickly reveal whether you actually understand it.

Imagine you're teaching the subject to someone who hasn't taken the class. You don't need a real audience; you can explain it aloud to yourself.

Try to avoid simply repeating textbook language.

If you're studying inflation, for example, could you explain what it means using an everyday situation? If you're learning about photosynthesis, could you describe the process without relying on a memorized paragraph?

When you reach a point where you can't explain what happens next, you've found a gap in your understanding.

Go back, review that specific part, and try again.

Spread Studying Across Several Days

One enormous study session can feel productive because you cover a lot of material quickly. Unfortunately, the information may also disappear quickly afterward.

Spacing study sessions gives you repeated opportunities to return to the material.

Instead of studying one topic for four hours on Sunday, you might study it for shorter periods on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

Each time you return, some information will be harder to remember.

That isn't necessarily a problem. Having to retrieve the information again is part of the practice.

Mix Up the Questions

Students often practice one type of problem repeatedly.

For example:

10 multiplication problems.

Then:

10 division problems.

Then:

10 fraction problems.

This makes choosing the method easy because you already know what kind of question you're answering.

Once you've learned the basics, mixing different problem types can create a more realistic challenge. Now you have to recognize the problem and decide which method applies.

This can be useful in mathematics, science, language learning, and other subjects where choosing the correct approach is part of the skill.

Flashcards Work Better When You Actually Test Yourself

Flashcards can be extremely simple and still useful.

The mistake is flipping the card too quickly.

Look at the question and give yourself time to retrieve the answer. Say it aloud or form a complete answer in your head before checking.

If you almost remembered it, don't automatically count that as correct.

Separate difficult cards and revisit them more frequently while still occasionally reviewing the easier ones.

Digital flashcard systems can automate some of this by scheduling cards based on how well you remember them, but paper cards can work perfectly well too.

Beautiful Notes Aren’t Necessarily Better Notes

Color-coded notes can be useful for organization. They can also become an elaborate form of procrastination.

If you spend an hour rewriting information you already understand because you want the page to look perfect, ask whether that hour could have been spent testing yourself instead.

Notes only need to be clear enough to help you learn.

A messy page that helps you remember the material is more useful than a beautiful page you can’t recall during an exam.

Use Practice Tests Differently

Practice tests aren't only useful for predicting your score.

They can help identify exactly where your knowledge breaks down.

After completing one, separate your mistakes into categories. Maybe you misunderstood a concept, forgot a fact, made a careless calculation, or knew the information but misread the question.

Those are different problems and may need different solutions.

This makes the next study session much more focused than simply saying, “I need to study more.”
