Not every old product is worth refurbishing, though. Repair costs, available replacement parts, device condition, and software support can all influence whether refurbishment makes sense.
Recycling Starts With Taking Things Apart
When electronics can no longer reasonably be reused, specialized recycling can help recover some of the materials inside them.
A device may contain plastics, glass, steel, aluminum, copper, and small quantities of other valuable materials. Circuit boards and electronic components can contain metals that are worth recovering rather than permanently discarding.

Your Old Phone Contains More Than Plastic and Glass
A smartphone looks relatively simple from the outside, but inside it is a dense collection of materials.

Phones, computers, tablets, and some other connected products may contain personal files, account information, saved passwords, photographs, messages, or other data.
Before selling, donating, trading in, or recycling a device, follow the manufacturer's instructions for backing up anything you want to keep, signing out of relevant accounts, disabling device-tracking or activation features when required, and securely resetting the product.
Simply deleting a few visible files isn't the same as properly preparing a device for a new owner.
Manufacturers Are Thinking More About Repairability
One challenge with modern electronics is that some products can be difficult to repair.
Components may be glued together, batteries may be difficult to replace, and specialized parts or tools can sometimes be required. Software can also affect whether replacement components function correctly.
This has helped increase interest in repairability and longer-lasting product design.
Some newer devices are being designed with easier component replacement in mind, while manufacturers and regulators in various markets have also paid more attention to access to parts, repair information, and software support.
How repairable a product is may increasingly become something consumers consider before purchasing it.
Software Can Determine a Device’s Useful Life Too
Electronics don't necessarily become obsolete because the hardware stops working.
A phone or computer may physically function while no longer receiving important software or security updates. Apps can eventually stop supporting older operating systems, and connected products may lose functionality if an online service is discontinued.
That creates an unusual kind of waste: hardware that still works but has become less practical because the software ecosystem has moved on.
Longer software-support periods can therefore play an important role in extending the useful life of electronics.
A More Circular Technology Industry
The traditional product cycle is straightforward: extract materials, manufacture a device, sell it, use it, and eventually discard it.
A more circular approach tries to keep products and materials useful for longer.
That could mean repairing a laptop instead of replacing it, selling a working phone to another user, refurbishing returned electronics, recovering materials from devices that can no longer be used, and designing new products with eventual repair or recycling in mind.
No single approach solves the entire problem.
But the next time an old device reaches the back of a drawer, it’s worth remembering that “I don't use this anymore” doesn't necessarily have to mean “this is garbage.” It may still have another owner, another purpose, or useful materials waiting for their next life.
